Does sleep apnea and/or snoring keep you or a loved one from a good night’s sleep? Oral appliance therapy is an excellent option for treating sleep apnea and snoring. Especially recommended to patients who cannot tolerate CPAP, oral appliance therapy involves wearing a removable oral appliance during sleep. CPAP is often prescribed for severe sleep apnea, while oral appliances can be used to treat mild to moderate sleep apnea. There are two main types of oral appliances:
- Mandibular repositioning devices: These oral appliances keep your airway open while you sleep by repositioning your lower jaw forward and slightly down.
- Tongue retaining devices: These oral appliances hold your tongue in place to keep your airway open.
Mandibular repositioning devices are more widely used then tongue retaining devices. Both types of devices, however, can treat sleep apnea and maintain an open airway during sleep. Your oral appliance will be custom fit to your mouth to ensure that it is both comfortable and effective. Unlike CPAP, BiPAP, and AutoPAP, oral appliances do not use machines, hoses, or facemasks.
